Do you like American Apparel?

May 13, 2010 at 5:09 pm (Uncategorized)

So… I was at American Apparel the other day and my mom was telling me how they have had American Apparel stores for a while now. I was wondering when the first store was founded so I looked it up on google and it turns out it was founded in 1989 by Canadian Dov Charney. He had a long history with T-shirts and a fascination with American Culture. It was Charney’s first year at Tuft’s University when he began experimenting with the name “American Apparel.” This store became so famous that they created a retail store in Downtown L.A. in 2000 where they made blank T-shirts and experimented with uniform companies. It is because of Dov Charney that we get to wear clothes from the late 80’s. Thankyou Dov!

Thinking about aving the earth? Heres How!

May 4, 2010 at 7:20 pm (Uncategorized)

1. Pay attention to how you use water. The little things can make a big difference. Every time you turn off the water while you’re brushing your teeth, you’re doing something good. Got a leaky toilet? You might be wasting 200 gallons of water a day. Try drinking tap water instead of bottled water, so you aren’t wasting all that packaging as well. Wash your clothes in cold water when you can.

2. Leave your car at home. If you can stay off the road just two days a week, you’ll reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 1,590 pounds per year . Combine your errands — hit the post office, grocery store and shoe repair place in one trip. It will save you gas and time.

3. Walk or ride your bike to work, school and anywhere you can. You can reduce greenhouse gases while burning some calories and improving your health. If you can’t walk or bike, use mass transit or carpool. Every car not on the road makes a difference.

Empty water bottles in a trash can.
If you must drink bottled water, recycle the bottle.

NEW YORK

April 27, 2010 at 11:39 pm (Uncategorized)

So I just got back from New York and let me just tell you…I love Vegas! The people here are nice, they are not in any rush and they almost never honk their horns at you when driving. This past week when I was traveling the streets of New York I froze my butt off. It was raining and I did not bring the right clothing to wear. I did however eat and shop at lots of cool stores. I bought awsome new shoes, bracelets, hats and shirts. I also got to try their bagels and the BEST pizza! (haha) The pizza place I noticed that had the most amount of people was a plact called Big Nicks. It is a really tiny resteraunt that can be easily missed so next time you head to New York, keep your eyes peeled!

Mothers Day

April 21, 2010 at 5:24 pm (Uncategorized)

Mommy Day is coming up! that means baking cookies, buying flowers, and making a family movie. Our moms are the ones that give birth to us, take care of us, and make sure we always have a smile on our faces. Everyone has different traditions when it comes to Mothers Day. Some people go hiking, some people have a nice dinner but the most traditional way people celebrate Mothers Day is by making a simnel cake.

“Whistler’s Mother” has
become an icon of Mother’s
Day ever since American-
born artist James McNeill
Whistler immortalized his
mother in 1871.

Volleyball

April 15, 2010 at 4:47 am (Uncategorized)

I absolutely love sports and I have probably tried every single sport there is out there. The one that is my all time favorite is volleyball. Its not a difficult game but it inclueds a lot of hand-eye coordination and quick feet. In volleyball you must remember that your opponent is predictable. You never want them to do what they want but you do want them to do what you want. Really good players are predictable and having a strategy helps that. By forcing them to do what they don’t want, they are likely to do what they are not good at. They key is to talk the opponents “out of the zone.”

ART

March 24, 2010 at 5:06 pm (Uncategorized)

For the people who love art, their is a cool website that you can go to that explains all styles of art and the artists who make that type of art.For those of you who know Jackson Pollock, who makes abstarct art, he felt that paintings did not have to show things that are recognizable; he used colors and shapes instead of people and animals. For those of you wo like Claude Monet who makes impressionist paintings he decided to paint people as if they had just taken a quick glimpse of the painting. His paintings were usually in a setting like outdoor scenes like landscape and he painted his pictures in such a way that they shimmered in the light.

If you want to take your love of art to the next level, there are many cool museums that have paintings from Monet and Pollock. There is the smithsonian and Art Lex, even the Andy Warhol museum.

Coolest iphone App

March 20, 2010 at 2:11 am (Uncategorized)

One of the biggest phones on the market at the moment is the iphone. Its known throughout the whole world and has made some big bucks. There are currently commercials and songs to the theme of a new “iphone app.” There are way too many too count but some of the coolest apps out at the moment are Shazam and Drummer. Both apps are used to impress someone. With the Shazam app you can trick a person into thinking you know a certain song that is playing and Drummer impresses someone by pretending that you know how to drum. There both silly and fun but if you don’t like these, there are many more apps to choose from.

Oscars

March 12, 2010 at 6:04 pm (Uncategorized)

There were many big moments at the Oscars this year: Ben Stiller dressed up as a Navi from Avatar, The Hurt Locker won numerous awards as well as Avatar and the movie Precious won an award. The movie Precious was based on a book called Push by Sapphire. Monique, the best supporting actress for this award, got a standing ovation from the crowd as she walked to the podium. Monique herself was raped by someone in her family much like the story Precious. Once the director told her to channel that anger in her character, her emotions just went wild and she really channeled that character. Monique thanked the Academy with proving her award can, “be about the performance and not about the politics.” She also thanked Hattle McDaniel, the first African American women to win an Academy Award, for paving the way.
